14 travel photos to daydream about

Downtime and Daydreams Blog - Travel Daydream - Greece

I’ve lost track of how many thousand travel photos I have, I’ve taken a lot. A LOT. Not all of them are great, some of them are actually terrible – but they inspire a sense of adventure in me, and a boatload of wanderlust.

If you need some destination inspiration, or just need a quick daydream session – I’ve got you. Scroll on my friend. These may not all be award winners, but they show you moments in time at my favourite destinations, and might give you a new perspective – who else takes photos of Greek dogs enjoying the sunset??

Monument Valley, Utah, USA

Downtime and Daydreams Blog - Travel Daydream - Monument ValleyI LOVE a good road trip, and this is one of my all time favourite photos from my travels – so much so, I’ve blown it up and hung it on the wall. This is travel inspiration at its best, so pack your bags and get on the road!

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Downtime and Daydreams Blog - Travel Daydream - RioThis is the view that started it all – my first trip overseas and I ended up standing on this mountain, underneath the world famous Corcovado statue, looking at THIS. Talk about naive kiwi girl brain explosion. A life time of travel began right there, so every time I look at this photo, I remember that new excitement of discovering what’s out there in this big, beautiful world of ours – and realise there is so much more still to explore.

Bruges, Belgium

Downtime and Daydreams Blog - Travel Daydream - BrugeI went to Europe thinking about the Eiffel Tower, and the Vatican and Big Ben, and what surprised me was all of the unexpectedly beautiful places that you don’t hear about so much. This is one of them – beautiful Bruges, where you find yourself under a weeping willow, looking out over a misty lake at sunset. Talk about wow.

Actually, here’s another one of incredible Bruges – it’s such a beautiful small town, and is a great place to spend a couple of days eating waffles and fries topped with mayonnaise. Mmmmmm….

Naivasha Wildlife Reserve, Kenya

Downtime and Daydreams Blog - Travel Daydream - GiraffesHands down one of the best moments of my life. Walking through the forest in Kenya, surrounded by giraffes. Amazing. Goosebumps material. No matter how many times I go to Africa, it will always be on my destination list. If you’re planning a trip to this amazing region, check out my travel tips for an African safari.

Wanaka, New Zealand

Downtime and Daydreams Blog - Travel Daydream - New ZealandIf you’ve seen my post on Queenstown, you will have seen this pic – it’s become one of my all time fave travel photos to daydream to. Every good thing you’ve heard about New Zealand is true, so if you haven’t been there already, get to it!

New York, USA

Downtime and Daydreams Blog - Travel Daydream - NYC

New York City had me at ‘passport please’. I always have, and always will, love this city with a passion – and trust me, if the plane I’m on is anywhere near New York I stop in. It might be something to do with growing up watching movies set there, or the general vibe of the city, but it feels familiar and new all at the same time. It’s always changing, and there are so many aspects to see it from, I just can’t get enough. So, every time I see a photo of New York, I get that pang of itchy feet.

Damnit I just couldn’t stop at one – so here’s another. It’s beautiful even in winter when there are no leaves in sight. Well played NYC, well played. If you’re on your way to the city of dreams, I’ve got some tips for you!Downtime and Daydreams Blog - Travel Daydream - Central Park

Mt Sinai, Egypt

Downtime and Daydreams Blog - Travel Daydream - Mt SinaiI was lucky enough to capture this moment, a local man in contemplation atop one of the most historical and biblically significant spots in the world – Mt Sinai in Egypt. We climbed this ridiculously large and rocky mountain to see the sunset over the stunning landscape, where it was so peaceful and quiet and incredible. If you’re going to Egypt, don’t stop at the pyramids and the sphinx, there is so much more to see!

The Nile, Egypt

Downtime and Daydreams Blog - Travel Daydream - Nile Egypt

While we’re in Egypt, this is another one for me that massively inspires my travel daydreams – I was on a tour in Egypt that included two days of felucca sailing down the Nile. I was as daunted as you may be when I tell you there are no beds, no toilets, no showers, no engine… nothing but a floating hunk of wood with a sail attached. I expected to hate it, but I LOVED it. It was beautiful and serene. This is the stuff travel daydreams are made of.

Port Douglas, Australia

Downtime and Daydreams Blog - Travel Daydream - Port DouglasIf it’s golden sand and palm trees you’re daydreaming of, here’s just the thing. Port Douglas in Tropical Far North Queensland. It’s enough to make you daydream of moving there.

Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland

Downtime and Daydreams Blog - Travel Daydream - Switzerland

Okay, back to the mountains – this is why Swiss cheese is so good, folks. Chilled out cows with necklaces. They are so docile, and so beautifully well looked after, it’s no wonder they are pretty much smiling. Why wouldn’t they, look at their back yard!!

Los Angeles, USA

Downtime and Daydreams Blog - Travel Daydream - LAI’ve had a turbulent relationship with LA – it can be a bit underwhelming. But all it takes is a view from the hills over one of the most famous cities in the world (even if it is just famous for being famous), to inspire a city escape. If you’re planning an LA stopover, I’ve got some super sweet ways to live like a celeb, but on a real person’s budget!

Santorini, Greece

Downtime and Daydreams Blog - Travel Daydream - GreeceLet’s round out the daydreaming with our dreaming pooch, talk about a great view. The Greek Islands, and Santorini in particular, is the kind of place where you feel like you’re in a dream the whole time. From the unbeatable sunsets, to the clifftop dining, to the white and blue terraced houses, it’s everything you’ll expect it to be and more!
